The Commencement Post

Commencement: meaning beginning, or start.
I’m one to hyperbolize. I wouldn’t call it overreaction, I’d call it…an ability to look beyond the literal, obvious meaning of an event or thing, and see it for what it is. Commencement means the beginning. And yet, right now, in May 2017, it is putting an end to my college career.
For a long time, I didn’t understand the people that were excited to go forth into the world and join the workforce. An end to my education felt like an end to growth, to learning, an end to hope. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, maybe the uncertainty was a contributing factor to my anxiety: if I failed immediately upon graduating, it only seemed to prove that I couldn’t stand on my own two feet, that I was just a failure when push came to shove.
My biggest fear come graduation was that I would have nothing to motivate or inspire me without the stimulation of a structured learning environment. Of course I knew what made me feel fulfilled; writing, food, travel, books, music, running…
And that’s when the seed of an idea came my way. How could I combine the things that I cared about most, and learn while doing it? How could I write about the things I want, within the structure that I want, and learn about the things that interest me? Posts. Blog posts. To help me work through my process, to help me discover the wonderment in everyday life, to help me feel fulfilled.
The Post Graduate.
I asked a few of my friends to brainstorm this idea with me. I asked my friend Emma, whom I met on a crazy six month adventure in London during a study abroad program, to co-edit. Together, we began reading more, talking to more people, looking for more material. We became hungrier (for knowledge, but a pastry here and there never hurt anyone).
Emma and I have both experienced that moment in our lives where we couldn’t imagine a life after college, and now here we are, post-grads, living. It seems appropriate that we begin to navigate this new phase of life together, under the cover of the New York City skyscrapers that we call home. We both believe that in order to build a life, we should enjoy it, taking in the world around us, taking risks, and never letting our education end.
Commencement: welcome to the beginning of the rest of our lives.
This blog is for and about people that can’t stop moving. Offering up ways to find purpose in everything, for a self-motivated audience. We write about what excites us, about the things that color our lives. This blog offers up ways to explore, to caffeinate, to love, to read, to learn; all without the structure of college.
We want The Post Graduate to speak to people with messy, complicated, and wonderful lives by including all kinds of perspectives and stories. If you have a story to share, we want to hear it. Write about what excites you, what inspires you. Go to our contact page and share it with us!
In the meantime, happy exploring!
